According to Adrián Purkart, a zoologist from the Comenius University in Bratislava, it is a relatively new species that is still being studied.»We are currently finding out where and how this bee builds its nests in Slovakia.We found it mainly in dry trees,» states Purkart.
Huge size and unusual appearance
Compared to the common honey bee, the Asian species is significantly larger.»It is almost three times bigger,» describes the scientist.This species does not yet have an official Slovak name, but experts call it the Čalúnnica bee.It is characterized not only by its size, but also by its black head, which allows it to drill holes in wood.
A danger to humans?
Although it looks impressive, there is no reason to panic.» It is not dangerous for a healthy person, it is another useful pollinator of our flora,» reassures Purkart.Still, he warns those with allergies or sensitivities to animal poisons to be careful.Beekeepers can rest easy, this species does not threaten local bee colonies.

Another unwanted visitor from Asia is the aggressive ladybug.However, this Asian ladybug has a much less peaceful nature.»These ladybugs are cannibals, they can destroy our original population and they will also bite a person unpleasantly,» warns the scientist.
